Study on operation productivity of urban railway trains: Focus on effects of train failure on malmquist productivity

Abstract

Maintenance is a key activity in the operation of urban railways. Optimized maintenance is crucial to maintaining cost-effectiveness, failure prevention, and railway transportation service level. In this paper, we analyzed maintenance operation productivity of trains using the Malmquist productivity index, focused on Seoul Metro Line #8. In addition, based on the productivity index results, we analyzed effects of system failures on the Malmquist productivity index changes. It was found that it had a significant effect on failure of HVAC, Inverter Propulsion, Electric, Brake, Door equipment, and Car Body Structure. Especially, it is confirmed that the occurrence of failure in HVAC and Inverter Propulsion system has a relatively large effect on productivity index changes. This study's implication is that prevention of certain equipment or system failures of rolling stock is effective to maintain the service level of operation of rolling stock and the urban railway.
