Abstract

CeO2-Gd2O3 system was examined for the preparation of stable slip for aqueous slip casting. Starting CeO2 powder could be reduced after one day milling and its potential and viscosity was examined from the pointview of electrokinetic and rheological behavior. In particular, Gd3+ ion dissolution in Gd2O3 occured as well as in CeO2-Gd2O3 mixed slurry. This gave a hindrance to get a stabilized slips for casting and relieved by adding anionic dispersant as much as 0.5wt% at pH9.5. Well-stabilized slips containing 24vol% CeO2-Gd2O3 were slip-cast and sintered at 1600°C, 4hrs. Upon this condition, slip-cast green and sintered specimen were density of 4.07g/cm3 and 7.01g/cm3, respectively. After sintering, it had no detectable Gd2O3 and formed solid solution incorporated CeO2 with dopant Gd2O3.
