Computer-aided maintenance management system for coating condition of steel bridge using computer vision

Abstract

In this paper, we introduce an Automatic Coating Inspection and Management System (ACIMS) that diagnoses the coating condition of steel bridge automatically using computer vision techniques. The system inspects the coating of steel bridges using color information and properties of deteriorations, and manages the data inspected for maintenance. The proposed system consists of two modules: Server and client. The client has an inspection module that detects rust area and peeled region in image by non-parametric modeling of the color distribution. Through the experiment, the ACIMS was tested on pictures which are obtained by local worker, and we obtain comprehensive performance of the system. The server manages the results of the inspection and provides useful information needed for maintenance to local workers. Using the system in judging the coating condition of the steel structures, errors commonly caused by the lack of experience or knowledge of inspectors have been reduced significantly, resulting in saving time and costs for the maintenance.
