Comparison of operation efficiency of urban railways: Focusing on efficiency comparison of operating single and heterogeneous rolling-stock by DEA

Abstract

In urban railway maintenance operation, to achieve target output by resource allocation, it is important to introduce and operate optimized rolling-stock. In this paper, we analyzed the efficiency of Seoul Metro Line 1 & 8 rolling-stock operations using DEA; this was done to compare the TE(Technical Efficiency) and PTE(Pure Technical Efficiency) and SE(Scale Efficiency) of rolling-stock operations by two types of single line and one type of rolling-stock. The three efficiency analysis results were significantly different between the two types of train on line 1 and the one type of train on line 8. In addition, we analyzed the scale efficiency status in the relationship between the input and output elements of the three types of rolling-stock, and it was confirmed that the state of scale efficiency is relatively optimized for line 8; however, line 1 showed inefficiency of scale. Through this study, we identified differences in efficiency according to rolling-stock type in maintenance operations of urban railway rolling-stocks. The purpose of this study is to suggest implications for decision-making, such as selecting and purchasing rolling-stock, disposal or expanded life, and establishment of strategies for optimizing rolling-stock operations and maintenance.
