A novel cyclobutenedione-containing poly(phenylenevinylene) (PPV) was obtained from 3,4-bis(4-bromomethylphenyl)-3-cyclobutene-1,2-dione via modified 1,12-polydehydrohalogenation. This resultant polymer, soluble in polar aprotic solvents, exhibits a regioregular structure of alternating cis- and transvinylene units. The present polymer exhibits photoluminescence with a maximum at 472 nm, corresponding to the blue emission region, in DMAc solution, and a red-shift emission at 574 nm in the film.
